Kirsch (Cherry brandy) is the oldest of the fruit brandies.
Kirsch comes from the german word "Kirsche" that means "cherry".
It was first produced in the XVIIIth century.
Fougerolles is the cradle of this cherry brandy made from the "guignes" variety, which is a small, almost black cherry with sweet flesh, harvested in the area.

May 2010, the 5th, the decree n°2010-453 of May 2010, the 3rd concerning the approval of the "Kirsch de Fougerolles" AOC (Protected designation of origin) is published. The Kirsch of Fougerolles has obtained its AOC 41 years after the first application. It becomes the first fruit brandy to receive an AOC designation in France, and the 4th brandy after the Calvados, the Cognac and the Armagnac.
The geographical area concerned by the AOC includes the city of Fougerolles and 10 surrounding villages. Fougerolles is rightly nicknamed the "City of the Cherry" as about 10 000 cherry trees are growing on this area, and 500 tons of cherries are harvested here every year.
